RC Baguio Sunrise

IT ALL BEGAN IN SEPTEMBER 2001, when Charter Pres. Manny Yap pooled a group of Baguio residents, inactive Rotarians and young professionals who met irregularly for breakfast at Solibao Restaurant in Burnham Park, Baguio City. The common reason of those fellowships was to discuss how we can help Baguio City’s environment. It did not start as a budding Rotary club at first but an informal assembly of people interested to share in saving planet Baguio.

The core group was composed of Manny Yap, Butz Mascariñas, Jun Rojas, Ric Meneses, Rey Abellada, Tony Bautista and Lyn Hernandez. We were not covered by Rotary Rules and procedures but our hearts were in place. Soon our presence was starting to be noticed and the members started inviting friends who also in turn, invited their friends.

The circle grew to about thirty from the initial circle of seven. But reality set in…. how could we truly pursue our plans if our resources are coming from the members alone? The job to help Baguio City and its environs is enormous and requires a more solid organization and support.

That’s when CP Manny invited speakers and PDG Mark Go was one of those who encouraged the group to join Rotary. He invited the group to take advantage of the facilities of the Rotary Foundation.

The group agreed to explore the possibility of affiliating with Rotary International through RI District 3790 Gov. Mark Go. The next few weeks marked our “Rotarization” by several Rotarians – PP Lyn Hernandez, PP Veeh Balajo, PP Ben Sunga of RC Baguio, PP Paul Simpauco, PP Tene Tenefrancia, PP Herr Bautista of RC Baguio North and others until we were finally chartered on February 27, 2002.
